Is this God speaking to me?
One question I am often asked is, “How do I know if what I am hearing or perceiving in my spirit is really from God? The other question is how do I know that what I am hearing in secular or religious circles is actually the truth?” That is an excellent question and one that we all need to ask ourselves often. There is an onslaught of fear being released throughout the earth. Many are being tossed to and fro by what they hear, what they see, what they think and what they feel.
There are also times when we read something in the Bible or we are praying about a situation and we sense that the Lord is speaking to us. We are encouraged in 1 John 4:1 (AMP) “Beloved, do not put faith in every spirit, but prove (test) the spirits to discover whether they proceed from God; for many false prophets have gone forth into the world.” This is wisdom and sound doctrine. When we follow this advice we will be able to make decisions and walk in the path God has set before us much easier.
We are encouraged to “test the spirits”. How then can we do that in our daily walk? The answer lies in Matthew 7:20 (TPT) Look at the obvious fruit of their lives and ministries, and then you’ll know whether they are true or false.” In the Amplified Bible this verse says, “Therefore, you will fully know them by their fruits.” What fruit does the Word, information or teaching produce in your heart and life?
The Fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22&23 (NLT) “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” When you sense the Holy Spirit speaking to you or you read or hear something that could be God how do you judge it? Look for the fruit that it produces within you. Does it provoke you to love? Does it produce joy and/or peace in your heart? Does it encourage you to be kind, good (generous), faithful and/or gentle and does it produce and encourage self-control?
The Word of God will ALWAYS produce fruit after it’s own kind. Judge everything by the fruit it produces. Doing this will enable you to discern what God is saying to you much easier. This principle applies to your thinking as well. What is the fruit that is produced in your life by the things you are meditating on and thinking about?
When the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Philippi he encouraged them not to focus on the disagreements and the anxieties of day to day living. His admonition was to “Keep your thoughts continually fixed on all that is authentic and real, honorable and admirable, beautiful and respectful, pure and holy, merciful and kind. Fasten your thoughts on every glorious work of God, praising him always.” Philippians 4:8 (TPT). He goes on to say that when they do this the peace of God would be with them in all things.
The Nature of God
One of the other ways of knowing if what you are hearing is from God is knowing and understanding the very nature of God Himself. Who does He say that He is? What is His character and reputation? How will He act according to who He says that He is? God will ALWAYS act according to His character. He will NEVER act or do anything that will contradict His Name, His character or His Word.
Going back to the question I asked at the beginning of this post. “How do I know if what I am hearing is really from God?” The answer is to look at the fruit that is produced in your heart. The Spirit of God will produce after His own kind. If what you are hearing or perceiving does not produce fruit in line with this then it’s probably not God.
The other answer lies in does what I am hearing align with who God says He is? What His Word says He will do. There have been times when God has spoken to me and asked me to do something and I have felt fear. In the midst of the fear, however, I have had peace. That peace comes from knowing He was going to strengthen, enable and anoint me to do what He was asking because His character is to strengthen me when I am weak and His Word tells me to “Fear not!”
Training our spirits and our spiritual ears to hear and know the voice of God is important in building the relationship between God and us. When we spend time with someone we know their voice and we get to know their character. John 10:27 (AMP) The sheep that are My own hear and are listening to My voice; and I know them, and they follow Me.
I release over you today the ability to know and hear the voice of God in a clearer way. I pray that He would make Himself known to you in the situation or situations you are facing and that His Spirit would lead and guide you into all truth in Jesus Name.
